At First United Methodist Church we believe that the church exists not to serve itself but to serve the world.
Through our support and our contributions, we participate in the far-flung ministries of The United Methodist Church in our district and annual conference, across the nation, and around the world.
Here in our congregation we take part in service groups, we sign up for special action projects, and we minister face-to-face in all kinds of ways, both when we gather and in our informal contacts. To learn more about our activities, check out our on-line calendar.
Some of our local opportunities to get involved include:
Bible Studies (seasonal)
We currently have a Pastor’s Bible Study that meets in the Fall and Spring (please see the church Google calendar for details) and will offer several seasonal studies throughout the year. This is a time for adults to grow in their knowledge of scripture and grow spiritually.
Gordon Community Food Pantry
The Gordon Community Food Pantry is a 501(C)3 nonprofit organization providing food to community members. Its drive-through distribution is held the 3rd Thursday of each month, behind the Harlin bldg. Donations may be mailed to P.O. Box 153, Gordon TX 76453. The First United Methodist Church of Gordon originally launched this food pantry, but it now has become its own organization and is now a mission of the entire community for which we are grateful. We have many members who volunteer their time with this Food Pantry and consider it a great resource in our community.
Local Schools
Many of our church members also volunteer at our local schools (as needed). We host (along with other community churches) back to school luncheons for teachers and administrators to help them kick off their year strong. The church also supports a backpack drive where we fill 60-70 backpacks full of school supplies for local kids. We love to support our local schools in any way we can.
Peaceful Stitchers (every Wednesday at 9:30AM)
Quilting and other arts and crafts help raise money to fund scholarships for local kids.
Twice Blessed Thrift Shop
Twice Blessed is a thrift and consignment store located at 115 Main Street. The profits from this organization goes back into the community through emergency aid, scholarships to local high school seniors, and other community needs as they arise. We have many members who volunteer here as well and appreciate the awesome mission this thrift shop has in Gordon.
United Women in Faith
Formerly known as United Methodist Women, UWF welcomes all women to engage in fellowship, mission, study, personal growth and social action. Church membership is not required.
United Methodist Men
Open to all men of the community, this group meets for fellowship and food, provides maintenance and grounds work for the church, and supports local mission projects.
