Our history
Our church began as the Hampton Methodist Church in 1880, meeting in a private dwelling near the present-day Old Cemetery. Once a month a Methodist circuit rider would come and preach.
In 1882 the church was moved to the newly established town of Gordon, meeting in a frame structure on the north side.
In 1900 the cornerstone was laid for a new church building made of pink-toned brick with stained-glass windows and a bell tower. That building was located at the same site as the present-day church.
In 1950 the old church building was razed and the congregation moved temporarily to the American Legion Hall while a new building was constructed in the style of the chapel at Perkins School of Theology at SMU. The first service in the present-day church was held on December 14, 1951.
The bell from the old church is preserved in a tower at the rear of the church and is still rung for services.
